Opening the Door to Your First Property Job

Starting a career in property can feel intimidating. You see roles that say “18–24 months’ experience required” or “no trainees”, and it’s easy to feel like you don’t stand a chance. But every property professional started somewhere — and your first opportunity could be the one that shapes your entire career.

I was just 18 when I landed my first Lettings role. With very little interview experience, I went through hours of interviews before a small independent agency in Richmond gave me a chance. That one opportunity changed everything for me.

Tips for Candidates: How to Stand Out

1. Use your past experience
Retail, hospitality, or customer service roles give you relevant skills. Highlight your client-facing experience, problem-solving, and ability to work under pressure.

2. Know the local area
Research the location you want to work in. Browse property websites so you can discuss local market trends during interviews.

3. Understand the market
Who are the local market leaders? What is the competition doing? Being informed shows initiative and interest.

4. Present yourself professionally
Clean, smart office wear and polished shoes make a big difference. Look neat, confident, and ready to work.

5. Be polite and engaged
Smile, be attentive, and ask relevant questions. Show genuine interest — employers notice enthusiasm.

Why Trainee Roles Matter

  • Learn from experienced professionals day-to-day

  • Develop practical, real-world skills

  • Build confidence and grow in the role

  • Open doors to future opportunities and promotions

Remember: every senior property professional started as a trainee. That first role is your foundation — embrace it, enjoy the learning, and take the chance to shine.

Take the First Step

Your first property job or trainee role is the beginning of something amazing. Show your spark, stay proactive, and don’t be discouraged by “experience required” signs.
